An artist creates art for necessity rather than pleasure. They remain restless until their art is complete. It’s as if a force calls on them to finish their art. You can identify great artists by the feeling they invoke in an audience because art without feeling is useless.

This article presents Anthony Lister as an artist who has achieved extraordinary while transcending the ordinary to invoke genuine feelings in the audience. Anthony Lister is an installation artist and contemporary painter well-known for the crafty merging of low and high cultural imagery.

We’ll feature Anthony Lister residency project for the Artist-in-Residency program at the Urban Spree and Head Hunter exhibition. It’ll give you a taste of his artistic streak. But before doing so, let’s delve into Anthony Lister’s past and influences first.

Anthony Lister’s Artistic Influences and Style

Anthony Lister was born in Brisbane, Australia, in the year 1979. But, a more interesting fact is his passion for street artistry. As one of the very best in the field, he has been described as pissing great art in his sleep by the graffiti art legend Banksy.

Anthony Lister Street Artist

Anthony Lister helped pioneer the street art movement as a teenager in his home city. What’s more? He’s rightly considered to be a premier street artist in Australia. After graduating from Griffith Queensland College, Anthony Lister undertook the self-discovery journey under his role model, Max Gimblett, in New York City.

Over the years, he’s mastered the ability to seamlessly employ multiple media, including spray paint, charcoal, oil pastels, and latex, for creating his own distinct figurative and scrawling style. In the truest sense of the word, Anthony Lister has been able to transcend the ordinary to achieve an extraordinary vision within a span of a few years.

Anthony Lister’s artwork has been exhibited internationally and nationally at places like Underdogs Gallery in Lisbon, Lazarides Gallery in London, Robert Fontaine Gallery in Miami, New Image Art Gallery in Los Angeles, Olsen Gallery in Sydney, Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York City, Fireworks Gallery in Brisbane, Black Art Projects in Melbourne, and Allouche Gallery in New York City.

Currently, Anthony Lister works and lives between New York City and Sydney.

Anthony Lister’s Residency Project for Urban Spree

From August to September 2018, Anthony Lister masterfully created an entirely new body of large scale sculptures, paintings, a large mural, and media art for the Urban Spree in Berlin. The artwork was part of the three weeks Artist-in-Residence programs.

Anthony Lister successfully incorporated a massive palette of references stemming from African masks, cubism, religion, Aboriginal Trans women, Picasso, tarot and divination, Damien Hirst, and Alejandro Jodorowski’s The Holy Mountain.

Anthony Lister also painted a massive mural at the Urban Spree, referencing some of the show’s paintings. Also, Egon Schiele’s tremors hybridize it.

Anthony Lister’s Solo Exhibition: Head Hunter

Another project that demonstrates Anthony Lister’s ability to invoke an unexpected feeling in an audience was his solo exhibition, Head Hunter, in 2020.

As a maestro, Anthony Lister used his signature scratchy linework with oil sticks for artwork on this project. But, his skills in using a brush for continuous movement to create abstract shapes play a significant role in attracting the viewers.

Apart from the stable and uniform style in the entire exhibition, Anthony Lister hones in on the techniques learnt during his mentorship under the famed artist Max Gimblett. With grace and elegance, he successfully incorporates these techniques into the multiple small works in the exhibition.

It took Anthony Lister almost a year to create the body of work for Head Hunter. Despite being a long process, he’s able to add a sense of grandiosity to the exhibition. The artwork carried an extensive art production and profound concept development steps. Moreover, he successfully achieved his vision of making the audience feel by reaffirming the exhibit as a communication channel.
